WWDC - Monday

While I realize (more than most, being an employee) there isn't much I can talk about...

The Wifi issue during the keynote was folks with 3G units setting up mini networks amongst their blogger friends. No way for Apple to shut that down aside from perhaps killing 3G. (Faraday cage on the Presidio?). The numbers involved were staggering. 500+. I think Steve was very gracious and patient in the handling.

I so want one of these phones. I need a medical breakthrough... Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

It was great to see Mike Ferris on stage again and just great to see him in general.

Sadly, iPod/iPhone/iPad isn't typically my beat at work, although some of my responsibilities bleed over. Personally, I don't have a developmental dog in the show for this platform (desktop boy here), but I'm a consumer of the products (over-consumer?). And I do play once in a while.

I can't wait for you all to go out and make great products! And then take my money. (Hrrrm…)

AppleTV

I find it ironic about those who thought we’d get a new AppleTV today. Oh, I suppose an update wouldn’t hurt, I’d rather just more HD content was available from the networks and studios, (HD Mythbusters, filmed, but never shown episodes of cancelled series, as two quick examples) but WWDC isn’t the venue. It’s a consumer product with no supported developer component.

Interaction with other Humans

I’ll be honest, aside from Twitter (@sanguish) I don’t get to interact much with others with my programming interests. Damn small Vermont town (shakes fist) where I can have 7 acres I can actually wander on without dealing with my OCD symptoms.

I was lucky enough to be invited to great dinner (I ate some, but sadly paid the piper later) with Tim Wood (@tjw from OmniGroup) and Michael Johnson (@drwave from Pixar). Two of the brightest people I know (I’ve known Wave for a lot of years) and both people I respect completely. I always learn from Wave about things in general (Tim is who I’d ask about programming issues).  BTW, if you’re not at Michael’s lunch-time talk on Wednesday, you’re really going to miss out.

Afterwards, got to see one of my favourite people (@curvyboom) and meet the engineer for FaceTime. I’ll have to ask Terry if he’s always so excited or if this was just a one-day high.

Also ran into Victor (another Apple peep, formerly in seeding) who is in a new position and I’m very happy for him. He has a distorted view of me, but I’m still happy for him.

Only physically bumped into one person today. Freaked me out (sorry to say that David Ewing) but in this size crowd it’s bound to happen. I tend to hang back and wait. But this was in line waiting for the keynote (the Apple line was quite short, the smart folks sitting in Caffe Macs or conference rooms back on Campus). We were in a special overflow room, as usual.

Tuesday, I’ve got three sessions I need to be at, as Dev Pubs DRI. I think this year I have the most sessions I’ve ever had a role in for at a WWDC.

Remember, Wednesday and Thursday morning I’ll be in the Documentation labs if you are attempting to track me down to serve a subpoena.

WWDC 2010 - Keynote is coming!

This will be my eighth WWDC as an Apple employee.

And I've gone to all but one since they started holding them at the Fairmont in SJC rather than the Doubletree. Personally, I miss the San Jose Conference Center. But mostly because 'the shut-in' didn't' have to leave the conference/hotel for a week'.

Each session has a Developer Publications writer attached to it in case there are questions about the documentation. And so typically I get to sit in the front row and sweat out that someone might ask something.

I dread getting on stage.

I don't mind answering questions but I'm sensitive about standing up there and hearing my amplified voice. Ugh. Just hit me up post session. Or in the hall. I'm the dude in the engineer shirt wearing cargo pants (OK, honestly? they're Vietnam era jungle fatigues).

I'll freely admit that I use my iPhone and iPad every day. I enjoy them and rely on them. I did iPhone programming for the 2.0 launch and loved it, and did more for recently published documentation.

But my heart is on the desktop. Overlaps as far as my documentation responsibilities are pretty limited to Foundation and Core Animation. So those are the sessions I'm assigned to. And labs. I get to work labs.

This year I'll be working documentation labs on Wednesday and part of Thursday. It's great to talk to developers about how we the doc navigation and search can be made better.

I have sessions or labs on every day but Monday, the first time I've been this busy, and it's not even the platform I specialize in. So much busier than usual. Toss in that my stress level is at a high (I'm not even supposed to be here*, according to my therapist) and it has the potential to be a very good or bad week. Good will be OK, bad would be a total catastrophe (potential hospitalization). So don't be a douche, please.

But at least I'll get to see developers, both friends and new faces.

Just don't touch me. Seriously. It is the biggest trigger for my obsessive compulsive disorder and it only makes the stress worse.

Did you catch the Clerks reference there?
